AVID Interview Day at Wilson High School in Long Beach | May 22nd 2012

Education is changing and evolving with the times and more schools are creating programs and teaching techniques that are preparing our our students for "real world" job and career experiences.

Many schools citywide, statewide and nationwide are adopting "Linked Learning" in their curriculum. It is geared towards large numbers of students feeling bored, unchallenged, or unclear about the relevance of school. Linked Learning is a high school improvement approach that makes learning exciting and challenging. It connects strong academics with real–world experience in a wide range of fields, such as engineering, arts and media, and biomedical and health sciences—helping students gain an advantage in high school, college, and career.

In an effort to support our community and local schools, Linda and I are participating in the 2nd Annual AVID Interview Day at Wilson High School. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory program that ensures students earn acceptances and degrees from colleges and universities. We, along with other business professionals from the community, will be conducting mock interviews with Long Beach Wilson Junior and Senior AVID students. Interview Day is an opportunity for these students to get real world experiences to meet the expectations and skills that are required in today's workforce. Linda and I will be interviewing students interested in a career in Real Estate.

Many of the students that attend Wilson High School know me from the many years I've served the East Long Beach and Los Altos Community. In fact, all 3 of my children attended Wilson. This is a great way for us to thank them for the great education they gave our children and to positively influence students who are the future of our community. We are very excited about it and are looking forward to participating!

We are a local, Los Altos, Long Beach, Real Estate Team who sponsors these garage sales by helping the participants with marketing and organizing the garage sales during the Spring and Summer. Cup with the Commander | LBPD Eastside Division Commander Beckman

405 Freeway Closure Update | May 2012 | Connector Closures | OCTA West County Connectors Project

Please be aware of the following updates from The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) on the ongoing closures of the 405 Freeway as part of the West County Connectors Project:

Nighttime closures are scheduled this week May 8 through Saturday, May 12.

All lanes from the northbound 405 Freeway will closed at midnight through 5:00 a.m. from the westbound 22 interchange to Seal Beach Blvd. nightly through Friday May 11th

CONNECTOR CLOSURES:

The southbound 405 to the eastbound 22 Connector will be closed from midnight to 5:00 a.m. nightly through Saturday May 12th.

The westbound 22 to the northbound 405 Connector will be closed from midnight to 5:00 a.m. nightly through Saturday May 12th.

The northbound 405 to the northbound 605 Connector will be closed from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. nightly through Saturday May 12th.

The eastbound 22 to the southbound 405 Connector will be closed nightly from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. nightly through Saturday May 12th.

The southbound 405 to the northbound 605 Connector will be closed nightly from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. nightly through Saturday May 12th.

Long Beach entered into Contest to Win $100,000 for a PetSafe Dog Park. We need Community Support to Win!

GREAT NEWS! Especially for all you Long Beach dog owners out there!

Councilmember O'Donnell just announced that our city, Long Beach has been entered in the "PetSafe's Bark for Your Park" contest.

The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 to build a PetSafe dog park. This is a great opportunity for our community to come together and participate to make this dog park a reality. Friends of El Dorado Dog Park needs your support in this competition and we would appreciate your efforts to succeed in the contest.

Community Watch Groups | East Long Beach | Enforce Public Safety

Attention Long Beach, specifically the residents of the 4th District:

Councilmember O'Donnell and his team have public safety as one of their top priorities and are reaching out to you for help. One of the best tools law enforcement has is the watchfulness and participation of neighbors.  

As your Los Altos Real Estate Specialists we support Councilmember O'Donnell's efforts and we encourage you to talk to your neighbors and start a Community Watch group.

Councilmember O'Donnell and his staff are there to help you get it started and to make your group a success. Follow the easy steps below, and please consider using his office as a resource for e-mail announcements, copies and organizational assistance.

STEP 1: Talk to your neighbors! Gather interested individuals and choose a point of contact and location for your meetings.

STEP 2:  Contact Kym Cloughesy, PSS East Division, and let her know you'd like to start a Community Watch group in your neighborhood.  She can be reached at (562) 570-5808 or via e-mail at lbpdeast@longbeach.gov.

STEP 3: Schedule your first meeting, and request assistance from the Fourth Council District office with making meeting announcements and distribution to your fellow neighbors.

STEP 4: Have your first Community Watch meeting, accompanied by LBPD staff and 4th District Council staff.  Exchange contact information with your neighbors and discuss public safety issues in your area!

It's that easy, and we are here to help spread the word about this great solution to preventing crime in our beloved Long Beach Neighborhoods. Please help us spread the word by talking to your neighbors about this important and much needed Community Watch Program.
